Field Trips & Group Tours

The Lewes Historical Society offers educational opportunities for everyone.

Historic Lewes guides are trained to provide 300 years of maritime history, including topics such as the Dutch settlement, pirate raids, the fishing industry boom of the 1960s, and modern-day tourism. By spending just a little time with one of our many talented guides, you will find that Lewes is not just a beach town, it is a town with a rich history that happens to have a beach!

Step on Guide Services

If you are traveling through Delaware aboard a coach-line bus or the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, or visiting from a major city such as Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Washington D.C., consider visiting “The First Town in the First State.”

For a group of 25-50 visitors on a coach for a 60-90 minute step-on/step-off guide service with photo opportunities costs a flat rate of $300. For a group of up to 25 but with a minimum of 10 visitors, the cost is $10 per person.

Please Note: Interested groups must provide their own coach, van, or shuttle bus. Historic Lewes is unable to provide any motorized transportation. Please contact the Director of Education Marcos Salaverria with questions or for additional information.

Field Trip Experiences

The Lewes Historical Society provides a wonderful opportunity for school groups to visit historic Lewes and learn about its rich history. Cost is $5 per child and $10 for a lead adult. All other teachers, chaperones, and adult attendees are FREE!

While planning a school tour, please keep the following in mind:

  • We ask for at least thirty (30) days advance notification. Confirmation and tour information will be sent upon receipt of the request. All tours begin at the Thompson Country Store on the Historical Society Campus at Third & Shipcarpenter Street. Ample bus parking is available along Third Street.
  • For the safety and comfort of classes, as well as for the safety of our museums, large groups will be split into smaller groups of 15 students.
  • For a tour of the museums with an emphasis on small-town life in the late 1700s and early 1800s, the Thompson Country Store, Old Doctor’s Office, Midway School #178, and the Rabbit’s Ferry house will be a part of the itinerary.
  • For lessons about Lewes’ maritime heritage, a trip to the Cannonball House Maritime Museum and/or the Lewes Life-Saving Station Museum can be arranged.
  • Walking tours of the town to show students the highlights of Lewes in a meaningful context are available.
  • Specific curriculum-based programs are also available to download to create a standards-based program that flows from the classroom to the museum. These programs are designed to meet Common Core, Next Generation Science, and Delaware State History Standards.
